I had the pleasure of giving writing workshops to two cohorts of enthusiastic, attentive and intelligent 9-10 year old students at the German Swiss International School of Hong Kong (GSIS) using my signature “What You Can Do With Your Phone – Make Good Art” talk. With the support of GSIS’ committed and thoughtful educators, the students were introduced to better ways of using their smartphone – to connect with themselves and to make good art. They spent time creating their own good art, writing responses to sound and picture prompts and thinking about how to use descriptive words. I was impressed by how engaged the students were, how eager they were to answer questions and share their thoughts, and how willing they were to bravely share their writing with the entire group. I am always reminded anew of the reasons I love writing for, and working with, children: their openness, their curiosity and their excitement about the world that they are growing up in. What a wonderful journey to be part of, to be able to inspire and guide these young adventurers as they make their individual, unique ways. I am thankful to the passionate educator, Resham Premchand, Head of English, Segel Programme, for the wonderful opportunity to work with her students.
